Lighting and Sound

Lighting

Why did we design it this way?

Lighting is a great tool to help a scene both in tone, setting. A cyclorama, commonly referred to as a cyc, is defined as “a curved curtain or wall used as a background of a stage set to suggest unlimited space” according to the Webster dictionary. In theater a cyclorama is used by set designers and lighting designers to create the illusion of open space, distance, and the sky. Cyclorama can be backlit or frontlit depending on their purpose. For our scene we will be using the cyclorama frontlit with yellow, pink, and purple to emulate the dusk sky. Lighting is also used to broadcast what is going on on stage and direct the audience's attention. Floodlights are used to illuminate large areas of the stage since they offer a broad, soft light source. If we were to put this scene on stage we would use floodlight to illuminate. We left a large open space on the stage for our characters to move around so it is beneficial to have the entire stage lit.

Other Forms of Lighting

  • Soft Lamps – diffuse lights and wraps around the subject mainly to reduce shadows on stage. They are boxlike and typically portable.

  • Broad Lights – small lights housed in a boxlike container and typically include only 1 lamp. They are used in small areas on set to supplement lighting to lighten shadows and not change the character of the main light.

  • Fixed-Focus Lighting – covers a wide area of the stage with an even and controllable field of light.

  • Spotlights – Project beams of light coming onto the stage. LED light sources make excellent spotlights. LED lights such as SSRC’s LED Work Light provide very strong light sources for stages.

Sound

Why did we design it this way?

There are no written sound cues in Shakespeare’s As You Like It so it was up to us to add them in where we wanted. In act four scene one there are not many appropriate places for sound to be added. As a group we decided to not add any sound effects other than an underlying sound to help create the scene. Since the scene occurs in the forest during dusk we felt it was appropriate to have the underlying sound be nature sounds including crickets which often come out during the warmer months at night. Below is a 3 minute sound byte of an 8 hour audio clip.
