Act 4 Scene 1
Goal of Project
Originally our project was to perform in front of our college class act four scene one from William Shakespeare’s 1599 play As You Like It. Due to recent events with the COVID-19 outbreak our college moved classes to remote learning. We had to adapt and change our project, considering multiple options we decided to analyse and plan out our scene as we would want to direct it on stage. Building a website was a way to organize our materials and enhance user experience in a visual, creative format. As a group we decided to stay true to Shakespeare’s original work by setting the story in the renaissance. The story occurs in the forest in the warmer months during dusk. To emulate this we made the decision to have a color scheme similar to dusk which is navy, purple, pink, and yellow. Since the story is also in a forest we included green into that color scheme. As You Like It is a comedy so we want to keep the comical and ironic tone to the play. The whole situation is unrealistic, and since it’s a play we want to lean into that factor with the slight mystical element of all the colors, lighting, sounds, and characterization in the scene.
Throughout the different aspects in the scene we wanted to showcase the characters personality consistently. The character of Celina is the most sensible of the bunch which causes her to become irritated by Rosalind’s actions. Rosalind is acting as Ganymede during this scene but continues to have her sarcastic snarky attitude. Her main goal is to make Orlando a better partner by teaching him the correct way to treat his lover Rosalind. Orlando on the other hand is an over the top character who is not quite ready for a relationship, he is a love struck romantic who often misses social cues. More of their personalities are shown through their costuming, props, and actions.
